FLOW HEADACHE AND MIGRAINE TREATMENT CLINIC

Treatment for Headaches and Migraine

We will determine if your neck is contributing to your chronic headaches or migraine and help you find a long-term solution.

Helping you to find a long-term solution to your headaches and migraine

Finding lasting relief from chronic headaches and migraine is a challenging process for anyone. While some forms of physical therapy (physiotherapy, massage, chiropractic, or osteopathy) can be great at providing short-term relief, they often fail to create sustainable improvements. However, in the last ten years, research has given rise to innovative and effective forms of treatment.

At Flow, we are passionate about helping people living with chronic headaches and migraine achieve significant, sustainable improvements and reduce their reliance on medications.

Introducing the Watson Headache® Approach

Our treatment process utilises the Watson Headache® Approach. It is based on the pioneering clinical research and experience of Australian Physiotherapist Dr Dean Watson who has spent the last 25 years understanding how the neck can influence migraines (1, 2). His approach has been shown to reduce sensitivity in the “headache centre” of the brainstem (the TCC) (2). Brainstem hypersensitivity is known to be an underlying cause of headaches and migraine (3, 4).

What is the Watson Headache® Approach?

The Watson Headache® Approach is a hands-on treatment approach created specifically for people living with chronic headaches and migraine. Initial examination and treatment aim to identify and resolve an often overlooked misbehaviour in the upper neck. This can be responsible for brainstem sensitisation; contributing to chronic headaches and migraine. Once we resolve this issue, we will desensitise the “headache centre” (or TCC) in the brainstem (2). All treatment is hands-on and uses a precise, sustained pressure on the upper neck. There is no heavy manipulation or “cracking” of the neck.

Why should I give the Watson Headache® Approach a go?

We know you’ve most likely tried various treatments without long-term success. Research on the Watson Headache® Approach shows it can accurately determine whether the neck is contributing to chronic headaches and migraine (5). It was also found to create a lasting reduction in migraine severity, frequency, duration and medication use (6). Put simply, this approach can determine if your neck is contributing to your chronic headaches or migraine and has resulted in longer-term, sustainable outcomes.
“It doesn't matter if you've been living with headaches or migraine for 20+ years or it's a recent issue, we can achieve sustainable results.”

FAQs

It is certainly not the case that the neck is a contributing factor for everyone living with chronic headaches or migraine. We pride ourselves on our thorough assessment process. It should be clear to you at the end of the assessment whether or not your neck is a contributing factor.

How much time it takes to create a sustainable improvement is different for everyone. That said, we are aiming to see a significant change in your symptoms within the initial three weeks of treatment.

This can be different from one person to the next. In the initial phase of treatment, you should expect to need 4-6 sessions to create a meaningful change. Once an improvement to the neck is made, we will begin to replace treatment with simple strategies to maintain the improvements at home.

The initial appointment is $140 and all subsequent appointments are $120. The cost can be subsidised by private health insurance or a care plan from your GP.

If the neck is contributing to the issue, the relevant joints and muscles in the neck are likely to be sore. During the treatment we will be applying pressure directly to these areas. That said, it’s important that you are able to stay relatively relaxed during the treatment for it to be effective. We will always monitor how sore it is and not let it become too uncomfortable.

It is normal for there to be some tenderness in the neck especially after the initial treatment, although this is not always the case. Any post treatment soreness is unlikely to last more than 24 hours.

Our Process

Our process is an individualised three-step process.
1

Step 1:
Examine

We will take you through a detailed assessment that will determine whether your neck is contributing to your migraine or headaches and whether it is treatable using this approach.

2

Step 2:
Treat

Treatment aims to reduce stress on the upper neck and desensitise the 'headache centre' of the brainstem. The initial treatment phase lasts for 2-3 weeks. We aim to create a significant improvement in your symptoms following this period.

3

Step 3:
Self-manage

Once we have established a significant improvement, we take you through the exercises and lifestyle habits that can help you to maintain the changes we have achieved.

Our Difference

We are dedicated to helping people living with chronic headaches and migraine find their flow again. Over the last 10 to 25 years, significant progress has been made in establishing the factors that contribute to headaches and migraine as well as creating more effective treatment options. We want you to benefit from these innovations. We keep up to date with the latest research so we can better help you find the relief you need and deserve.
