How does Osteopathy work?

What causes pain can sometimes be complex.

Our joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves throughout the body interact with each other. Beyond this, our jobs, exercise, diet and other lifestyle factors also influence our musculoskeletal health.

Our aim is to find and resolve the underlying cause of your pain and dysfunction.

We do this with a holistic approach to healthcare. By considering all the factors that may be influencing your aches and pains we aim at creating sustainable results.

Our Approach To Osteopathy

We take a detailed history and use a variety of hands on techniques to help assess and diagnose the cause of your pain.

Once we have established a clear diagnosis we will create an achievable, personalised plan.

Importantly, we tailor each plan to your individual needs and capabilities. This ensures that everyone is capable of achieving sustainable results.

At Flow Osteopathy we are experienced in an array of safe, non invasive hands-on techniques used to reduce pain and restore musculoskeletal health.

These may include soft tissue massage, stretching, mobilisation, manipulation and muscle energy techniques.

When necessary we will prescribe simple exercises and suggest lifestyle habits that can enhance the treatment outcomes.

FAQs

Osteopaths are primary health care providers that are qualified with a five year university education to assess and diagnose your health concerns (three years Bachelor of Science and two years Master of Osteopathy).

In Australia all Osteopaths are insured and registered with the Osteopathic Registration Board of Victoria (APHRA).

In accordance with registration laws, all Osteopaths are required to keep up to date with education, and reforms through mandatory continued professional development every year.

Osteopathic treatment is hands on, so depending on the location of your issue you may need to remove certain clothing items (tops, pants).

If possible, it is best to wear loose, comfortable clothing so your body can move easily.

We will supply you with a treatment gown to keep you covered and warm if you wish.

Please bring any MRI, ultrasound, x-ray scans and reports that are relevant to your presenting complaint with you to your initial appointment.

Osteopathy:

Initial appointments are 45-60 minutes and involve a taking a detailed medical history, assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Return consultations are 30 minutes.

Absolutely. It’s best to check with your provider.

Osteopathy is covered by most private health funds under ‘extras’ however, the amount covered will vary depending on your provider and the level of cover you have. At Flow Osteopathy we have a HICAPS terminal which allows you to make claims on the spot, so you only have to pay the gap.

Flow Osteopathy accepts patients with a Team Care Arrangements (TCA) or Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans. These plans can only be referred by your general practitioner (GP).  Medicare permits up to 5 of these sessions per calendar year.

Absolutely not, you can simply make an appointment online or over the phone.

If you’d like, we can always send your GP a letter to keep him/her in the loop with your management plan.

Yes. Osteopathic techniques are gentle and designed not to place stress on the tissues during pregnancy.

It is normal for some people to feel tender after treatment. This may last anywhere from 24-48 hours.

This is a great question. There are certainly some similarities between all three, but it is the underlying philosophies and treatment approaches that set them apart.

Whilst we don’t feel it is our place to describe the philosophies of chiropractic or physiotherapy, we can speak to some of the things that set osteopathy apart.

Our focus is on finding and resolving the underlying cause of your issue. Often this involves identifying and resolving various regions of the body that are affecting your pain and dysfunction. Our aim is always directed at providing long lasting outcomes as well as symptomatic relief.

Your osteopath will only work with one person at a time and allows plenty of time to address the issue holistically.

We will spend time working on muscles as well as joint mobility. We will also prescribe simple exercises, lifestyle advice and suggest various habits that can augment the effect of treatments and help sustain results.

Osteopaths are taught a wide variety of techniques that can be adapted depending on what will work best for your recovery.
